From insights into their experience to career growth and the challenges they've faced, this series offers a look into life at HFG. Get to know the people behind the scenes!
Next up is George Matthews, who joined our Underwriting, Claims & Broking team in January 2025.
The Journey
What attracted you to recruitment and, specifically, to HFG?
Recruitment appealed to me because it combines business development, client and candidate management, negotiation, and long-term relationship building – all areas that play to my strengths and interests. HFG stood out because of its strong reputation and focus on the Lloyd’s insurance market, which is a traditional, close-knit, and highly sociable industry I was eager to be part of. I saw it as the perfect place to grow and succeed.
How did you find the onboarding process, and what stood out to you in your first few weeks?
The onboarding process was relaxed and straightforward. From the beginning, the team was welcoming and easygoing. What really stood out was the level of trust and autonomy – you’re expected to hit your targets, but you’re given the freedom to do so without being micromanaged, which I really appreciated.
Experience at HFG
What has been the biggest learning experience for you since joining?
Getting to grips with a completely new industry – the Lloyd’s insurance market – has definitely been the steepest and most rewarding learning curve.
How would you describe the company culture at HFG?
It’s easygoing, professional, and collaborative. There’s a strong sense of team spirit, and everyone is supportive and driven.
Have there been any standout moments or highlights in your time here so far?
Definitely making my first placement in the Lloyd’s market. It was a proud moment that I’ll always remember.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from a colleague?
Keep a strong relationship with the HR departments of your clients – they can be your greatest allies.
If you could give advice to someone considering a career in recruitment, what would it be?
Only get into recruitment if you’re highly motivated by success and financial reward – you need that drive to consistently go above and beyond.
Personal Interests
What’s something people might not know about you?
I grew up on a beef and arable farm, which I worked on well into my twenties. It taught me the value of hard work from a young age.
If you weren’t in recruitment, what do you think you’d be doing?
Probably something in business development – I enjoy building relationships and working in a client-facing role.
How do you maintain a good work-life balance?
By staying close to my oldest friends and making time for them outside of work. It helps keep everything in perspective.
