Job description

A major reinsurance organisation is currently seeking a Senior Wordings Specialist.

Main Purpose of the Role:


To support underwriters and claims handlers in all non-contentious reinsurance wordings questions an international P&C reinsurance business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a technical expert for wordings issues on treaty and facultative reinsurance business across international P&C business;
  • Assess proposed wordings for compliance with internal guidelines, clarity, accuracy and completeness, drafting amendments as needed and providing non-technical explanations of your analysis to underwriters, client managers and claims handlers;
  • Develop new clauses and wordings as required;
  • Help to identify emerging risks and shape wordings requirements in relation to them;
  • Share your expertise with internal and external clients through workshops, training sessions and briefing notes;
  • Be actively involved in development of market standard wordings through participation in trade associations;
  • Contribute to the peer review process;
  • Deputise for the Head of Wordings


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum upper second class honours degree/ Volljurist with first or second Staatsexamen mit Prädikat;
  • Admitted to practice as a lawyer in the UK or Germany;
  • Significant prior experience in P&C (re)insurance, whether at a specialist law firm or in-house as part of an underwriting, claims, wordings or legal team, including giving advice on complex coverage issues.

Behavioural Competencies:

  • Excellent knowledge of contract law and insurance contract law;
  • English and ideally German language skills to native speaker level;
  • Exceptional drafting and communication skills, able to tell the story behind a wording through giving realistic examples and explaining pros and cons of alternative constructions;

  • Able to combine attention to detail with sound commercial judgement;
  • Responsive, able to balance competing priorities and deliver under time pressure;
  • Co-operative and solution-focused working style;
