Five marathons, five days: How HFG’s Jono made every step count

At HFG, we are continually inspired by the achievements of our people, not only in their professional careers, but in the ways they contribute to the world around them. Recently, our colleague Jono completed an extraordinary personal challenge that deserves recognition: running five marathons in five consecutive days, raising funds and awareness for Spinal Research.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the deeply personal motivation behind it.

A challenge with meaning

Jono and his brother Matt, both originally from Zimbabwe and now based in the UK, were preparing to run the London Marathon next year, but they wanted to do something more.

Their inspiration came from a close family friend in Zimbabwe who suffered life-changing spinal injuries following a motorbike accident. Witnessing the resilience, determination and daily obstacles faced by individuals with spinal cord injuries gave Jono and Matt a clear sense of purpose: to create awareness and raise funds for a cause dedicated to improving the lives of those affected.

Five days, four locations, one mission

Covering routes across Brighton, the Cotswolds, London and Gloucestershire, the challenge pushed both physical and mental boundaries. Running a single marathon requires endurance, discipline and resilience; running five in five days demands something far greater.

For Jono and Matt, however, the difficulty of the task served as a powerful reminder of their cause. The temporary pain, fatigue and mental strain were incomparable to the daily battles faced by individuals living with spinal injuries, and that perspective became their driving force.

As Jono reflected, “Every step we took was for someone who couldn’t.”

How You Can Support

Spinal Research continues to rely on charitable support to fund groundbreaking research and initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for individuals with spinal cord injuries.
