My time at HFG: Ben Huntley

Back to Blogs

In our 'My time at HFG' series, we ask our employees how it has been settling in to life at HFG in order to gain a better understanding of the challenges our staff face and the aspects they most enjoy!

Our next guest is Ben Huntley, an Associate Consultant within our GI Actuarial team.

Rate your onboarding experience. Were there any particularly helpful or challenging parts of training?

I joined HFG in October 2023 after working in the Lord Mayor of the City of London’s office, not far from here in Mansion House.

Initially I was unsure what the change in career would be like however it’s a decision that I’m thrilled with and has been made easier by my supportive teammates.

The transition has been seamless and whilst we are given autonomy to complete our daily tasks, the continuous training and guidance from team managers ensures we have a solid knowledge base to work from.

After less than a month at the company, I was delighted to make my first placement!

How has your previous work experience and qualifications helped?

My background working in the Lord Mayor's office has definitely helped me in being comfortable on the phone. I was in regular contact with senior figures in both the London Market and Government and was often at client meetings.

I don’t think however that any particular background fully supports this line of work – confidence and a willingness to learn about the market is what really matters!

What aspects of the role do you find most fulfilling?

As I’m sure is the case with most recruiters, it has been great to help place people in roles that will develop their career and make a positive impact on their lives!

How would you describe the company culture & work environment?

The Actuarial and Risk desk has a great team chemistry and a supportive environment which has helped me enhance my understanding of the market and develop in the role.

Additionally, the rest of the HFG London office team has been very welcoming in my first few months here!

How do you maintain a healthy work life balance?

8:30-6pm is quite the shift however I have been able to keep active outside the office, training towards a triathlon for June this year! It’s been a struggle through the winter months but will get much easier as the days get longer.

Is insurance recruitment what you expected?

It would be wrong to say insurance recruitment is not what I expected because I was unsure what to expect! It’s fair to say however that I have learned an awful lot and am very happy with how it has turned out. I’m looking forward to what’s to come at HFG!

What is to come at HFG?

I’m hoping to prove myself and earn promotion to consultant to tackle the Actuarial Risk market! I’m both optimistic and excited to make this transition and manage the 360 side of recruitment.
